    5:05 People thought HUNTER deserved more punishment?! Hunter?! The character who goes through so much trauma on an episode-by-episode basis that it almost seems like the writers were competing to see how much pain they could put him through? THAT Hunter? Seriously?

    Isaac Newton was portrayed utterly wrong. He was always very focused, known for precise wording, and famous for his disliking to deal with women, despite being famously handsome and healthy. This utter goofball fraternizing with a maid is the utter opposite of the historic person.

    The FineTimers were not "racist" at all. You can throw every example of what you thought was "racism", and I can prove how it was not racist. 1. Lindy instantly blocked the Doctor, because she is a young girl receiving an unsolicited message from a noticeably older man. In case you are not aware, girls in our real world receive dozens of those unwanted DMs far more frequently than anyone would like. Lindy did not block Ruby immediately, because Ruby was a fellow girl who appeared to be around the same age, so of course Lindy did not feel threatened. Still, Lindy most certainly did not openly trust Ruby, and immediately confronted Ruby for not being on her friends list. Also, Ruby knows her own peers better than the Doctor would, which is why Ruby knew to stroke Lindy's ego as well as make herself appear pitiful and inferior. To make another thing clear, I do not think the Doctor approached the situation wrongly. From a logical point of view, he thought it would be enough if he was honest and direct right off the bat. Unfortunately, he had no idea how hooked these Finetimers were to their constant thirst for "positive vibes". Ruby presumably has experience with social media which the Doctor did not, so she knew the situation would have to be approached more delicately and tactfully. 2. At the point when the Doctor shows up again, Lindy is already in a state of terror and distress. Lindy made it clear more than once that she did not even want to be engaging with Ruby, so of course she got mad on a hair-trigger when the Doctor showed up again. 3. The FineTimers are an exaggerated version of Gen Z and Gen Alpha's social media addiction. If you spend enough time interacting with them, you will learn that they have painfully short attention spans. For someone like me who has firsthand experience with this short attention span, it is no surprise to me that Lindy did not immediately recognize the Doctor. 4. FineTime has degenerated into a culture where literally no one interacts with each other in person. So, when Lindy realized that Ruby and the Doctor were in the same room together, she got reasonably suspicious. 5. Lindy has to convince her friends to trust the Doctor, because not only is he a stranger, but he is also an older stranger. If you take note of Lindy's comments later in the episode, she refers to old people as "stinky", and reveals that FineTime only allows young adults from ages 17 to 27. So, to make it clear Lindy and her friends look down on older members of the people of their own homeworld. So of course Lindy had to convince her friends to listen to an older person who is also a complete stranger. 6. "not one of us" is a very vague statement which certainly does not, and should not be, immediately equated to racism. To anyone who knows enough about social media culture, and have enough experience with how young people treat older people, we can clearly see that racism had nothing to do with Lindy's response. The Doctor was not "one of them", because he was a stranger, he was an alien, and he was an elder. The FineTimers certainly did develop a superiority complex, but race had nothing to do with it. The superiority complex can be much more accurately explained by the fact that FineTime, from the start, was an exclusive club which could only be entered through monetary payment. This most likely led the FineTimers to believe that they were, in a way, "superior" to anyone and everyone who could not afford to gain entry into FineTime. It is really not any more complicated than that, and it should not be seen as any more complicated than that. FineTime and its members essentially turned into a cult. And most cults indoctrinate their members by making them believe they are "better than everyone else" and that they are the "chosen ones". These are the most obvious takeaways that are either directly or subtly hinted at throughout the episode. I have rewatched the episode several times since my first watch, and there is not a single detail in the episode, that alludes to racism as we know it. Just because Russell T Davies claims that the episode is about racism, does not make it automatically true.

      I appreciate the time spent on honest discussion, that's what this is all about after all. If we take this ALL at face value -- that there are not axiomatic beliefs/motivations written into the characters at all and that the classism subtext and the social media echo-chamber/bubble subtexts were actually the main message of the third act, then why was everyone white? Like, when you put out a casting call for background extras you have to make appropriate specifications. What would have motivated the team behind the episode to exclude anyone who wasn't white? Also I'd like to pick your brain on something you said: that "you, SIR, are not one of us" is a line which you think "[...] should not be immediately equated to racism". I'm wondering why it shouldn't be? Is there something about racism which makes it a less likely motive? Is there something about racism that makes it this more rare and unlikely occurrence? Is there something so foul about racism that we should never interpret actions from people as racist unless we know for sure that they're total bottom dwellers or something? Genuinely would like to hear some insight about it. Also not to pick everything apart but it's not as though ageism would be a significant motivating factor that would drive the Finetimers to refuse help from a proven source of help. Their master plan was to contact the homeworld and have a bunch of adults, presumably strangers because it would be a rescue op, save them. Maybe you could argue it's familiarity, but there is one answer which fits ALL of the questions ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -The Bird

      @@idlescree So, your argument for, "It was racism", is based on the fact that all the FineTimers happened to be White? And what if all the FineTimers were all Black? Or any ethnicity other than White? Would you and everyone else be so willing to call it "racism" then? It should not be equated to racism, because the context of the scene simply does not imply any form of racism whatsoever. It has nothing to do with whether people are "bottom dwellers" or not, it is about maintaining consistent definitions of what racism is. The lesser forms of racism include acts of prejudice, discrimination, and assuming stereotypes. The higher forms of racism would be supremacist beliefs, coupled with systems of oppression that try to maintain the facade of supremacy. Nothing that Lindy and the FineTimers said at the end, expressed any form of racial discrimination against the Doctor. Their response and mentality is much more characteristic of a textbook cult. Typically, cult leaders brainwash their followers into believing that they are "better" than anyone who is not them. The FineTimers however, are an example of a group forming a cult around an ideal they worship (i.e. FineTime), instead of a single leader starting a cult and recruiting followers. The FineTimers' superiority complex stemmed from the fact that they were the "chosen few" who could afford to be FineTime members. It had nothing to do with their ethnicity or the visual ethnicity of the Doctor. For all we know, it is possible that the entire Homeworld population was White, which would mean that, in that planet's history, they enslaved anyone who was considered "inferior". "Presumably strangers"? First of all, calling for a rescue from the Homeworld was never part of anyone's plan. The main plan was to get to an underground escape route. It was just Ricky who got a spur-of-the-moment idea to contact the Homeworld to call for a potential rescue. Second, if the Homeworld was not wiped out, they would have called their parents, not "strangers".

      @@metawolf987 Thanks for following up! No, the interpretation of racism isn't because everyone was white. But 100% of the non-Doctor actors did not "happen to be" white, it was a decision made which would imply that the writer is being sincere when he says that racism was the motivation. The burden of proof is on those claiming that the writer has lied about his creative choices -- it's up to YOU to provide plausible reasons for the choice to racially exclude even the background extras. Yes, if all the Finetimers were another race and had similarly historic allegoric tones that would 100% be racist. The finetimers tell the Doctor that it's their God given right to conquer the land and secure the future of their people. That's a very intentional historic parallel. If, for example, the Doctor was Korean and 100% of the Finetimers were Japanese, it would be SUPER racist and CLEARLY a commentary on the real history of real racial prejudice. It's also tricky to say that there was no ethnic judgement on the Doctor when the finetimers referred to his technology as "voodoo", which is a very racially charged remark particularly in America in reference to spiritual practices of African Americans. Anyways, it's not enough to say "because the context of the scene simply does not imply any form of racism whatsoever" in response to a community (and the writer) explaining how the context of the scene very much seem to be racist. It's not enough to be able to imagine an alternative reason, you have to be able to substantiate why that alternative reason is more likely and/or why the racist interpretation cannot be correct. Of the 7 or so people who have tried to argue that this episode wasn't about race, none of them actually ARGUED that it wasn't about race. They just imagined scenarios, or sometimes invented scenes or lore which wasn't present, to provide alternative explanations. If you want to "prove" that the episode is racist, you need to substantiate how -- exclusively from within the text -- we can reason that racism is a less likely motive for all of the actions, words spoken, casting choices made, than whatever alternative(s) you can provide. On top of that, to REALLY make the case, you need to demonstrate how your alternative(s) explore/contribute to/determine the message of the episode. -The Bird

    Now this show is amazing and im very excited for the second season this fall!!! Heres the fact what i see in this show is an'ti impe'rialism and an'ti capita'lism. If silco didnt stand up the hor'rible treatment of the underground would have never stopped! Thats the fact as a gen z socialist i see this so hard in the series. Silco did do bad things but he did nothing wrong to get the underground to stand up against the council. He maybe a villain but he was a villain who was wanting the underground to become free from the grasp and he did care and love jinx even if he wasnt perfect father even didnt know how to show he cared but at the end of the first season we do see that he did love her. If he didnt try to gain the undergrounds freedom and independence the viloance and oppression of the underground.

    The only time I felt similarly fluid and connected alien worldbuilding was with the show/animated podcast "Midnight Gospel". I thought there would be nothing like it again for decades but here we are. My hope is that we are looking at the beginning of a whole genre of visual sci-fi which I can only describe as psychedelic gaianism or something of the sorts. Jodorovski would enjoy this I think.

       @fireredninja9320 ROFL. Baggage? He was always the Doctor, and behaving like Doctor Before and after the time war. You'd know this if you'd watched classic Who. How can you say recovered, when he is essentially a bag of incompetent wet lettuce now? This season, in the first 7 episodes he saves ONLY 1 person - a snot monster. NanE saves the kids, Beatles save the day in Devils Chord, AI saves the day in Boom, 73 yards - no one dies, Dot & Bubble no one gets saved, Rogue: The Doctor almost gets Ruby killed through post twerk flirting and the day has to be saved by Rogue. THAT is not fixing himself. That is him being written as, and behaving as a Massive PU$$Y not the HERO he should be.

    • @idlescree
      @idlescree 4 дня назад

      To be fair, the Doctor not being the sole cause of the solution is pretty common in Doctor Who and this series had fewer episodes + significant filming restrictions with Ncuti because he was still fulfilling filming obligations for his last season of Sex Education. That's not to say criticisms can't exist, but there are external factors which should be considered. Next season has the same number of episodes as far as I know, but Ncuti will be significantly more available for on-site shoots. We'll see how it turns out. In my personal opinion though, it feels a bit hollow to say that the Beatles saved the day when the Doctor unlocked 90% of the chord himself -- something we have no reason to assume the Beatles would have done on their own. Likewise it is the Doctor's actions which enable the AI to save him in Boom. I get that he doesn't necessarily have the final mic-drop moment, but it's not like he was passive in the story and the resolution just happened upon him. Compared to the 9th Doctor's final episode, in which his plan falls through when he chooses to be a coward instead of a killer and it's Rose -- entirely of her own actions and against the Doctor's wishes -- who shows up and saves the world (and him) from the Daleks. -The Bird

    • @idlescree
      @idlescree 11 дней назад

      In the full version of this video we elaborate on the meaning of that a bit more. The way that anti-black racism specifically prevents him from being able to help these people; it specifically creates a barrier for him that would not have existed if one of his white faces were there instead. The Night of the Doctor IS actually a good example of racism preventing the Doctor from saving someone -- but that's anti-timelord racism. This video isn't about the first time the Doctor was stopped by prejudice, rather just the way this episode avoids racist TV tropes in favour of delivering a much more real, more raw and upsetting conclusion. I actually LOVE the connection you've made with 8 and Cass in Night of the Doctor though, that's a very cool sense of continuity you've spotted which would be really fun to explore in a future video ~ That prejudice, ignorance, the antithesis of the Doctor's ever-curious and ever-learning personality, is the one ever-present barrier to the Doctor's every goal :0 Thank you so much for commenting, it means a lot to all of us :D -The Bird

    bold of you to assume that moral dilemmas, addiction, and situations that affect social status and familial responsibility are exclusive to adults living adult lives. that this idea comes so naturally to you shows that you have not experienced a truly broken family, or a terrible influence at a young age, or financial destitution by merit of circumstances entirely out of your control as a child. kids go through these things all the time. this show is important for everyone, and no story is too mature for a child who has gone through everything.

    I first binged Scavengers Reign about 2-3 weeks ago. I'm back to watch this with no spoilers! I think my favorite Scavenger is Kamen. I had a ranking for everyone else, but Kamen is just that one character in a series that once in a while I latch onto. He's just awful and his retribution by making him live with himself and his actions is just great. The ecosystems in this blew me away. I really loved a lot of the creatures shown. The little bug bird things that catch the water are my favorite little guys they look like little shot glasses. Also the road runner raptor esque dinos that capture their prey and then obliterate them with the heat of the sun is so cool we need more really varied and cool creatures. There's so many ups and downs to this show that had me crying and sitting up and staring waiting to see what would happen. The cruelty of the land and the idea that nature is still nature here is something that definitely stuck with me (thinking about Terrance being crushed to death and the parasites inside the peaceful sea slug...thingys that Ursula and Sam take shelter in). It takes us with the scavengers so far out of the depths of comfort and I love it. There's a guess of "what does that mean and what are the consequences for this action?" at every interaction in the new world and it comes with hefty prices. I love everyone's character arcs so much, and the little Levis are adorable. I definitely plan on rewatching and hoping for a s2 and a physical release one day. And merch. I'd love a little Vespa/Levi plush or the flower figurine. Also, as I continued to watch, the theme piano music started to feel heavier and heavier, especially leading up to the reveal about Kamen. Intrigue into foreboding and despair and then acceptance for me. Thanks for this video!

      I'm the only Australian Screeture, so I genuinely worry about the accent and lingo getting in the way of conveying my points to an international audience :x Thank you so much for watching and commenting! Our DW content doesn't get as much attention so it really means a lot to us all to see people getting into it! -The Bird

    I think Zuko and Hunter share parallel storylines, not identical. They travel in the same direction, but still are distinct and different paths.

    Sadly since it left netflix I havent kept up with Dr. Who, but I always found 10 clinging to life an interesting aspect of that character. Accepting death is something difficult and it seemed that the 10th doctor never really could.

      Hi and thanks for commenting! I'm really glad that you find 10's approach to regeneration an interesting aspect of the character, that's basically what the whole full video is about :D If you have a spare 18 minutes, or don't mind listening in the background, I think you would really enjoy the full video (ruclips.net/video/riLt915ZPVs/видео.html) as it delves into 10's outlook on regeneration, how it differs with the history and future of the show, what it means for the character himself in-universe AND for the show thematically! Thank you again for commenting, it really means a lot to all of us!! -The Bird

    I watched a interview where RTD said he had the idea YEARS before and Steven Moffat said there was no way he could do it so it makes me wonder was he going to do it with the then white doctor and all black finetimers, don’t get me wrong this episode was good but how amazing a gut punch would that have been

    • @idlescree
      @idlescree 15 дней назад

      If true, it's possible that it could have been a white doctor and any other ethnicity of finetimers, but regardless I think it's as much a gut punch no matter what. I think the reason that might feel more impactful to you in concept is either because you're white or because flipping them would be a social subversion; either one would rob the audiences that this DID naturally impact of that experience. That is to say, white people such as me and (maybe?) you might have felt a bit icky, or creeped out, or unsettled by the aesthetic of Finetime and not quite been able to pinpoint why until the end. When I hear first-watch reviews from black people, they (most if not all) clocked it INSTANTLY because we -- as the socially dominant class being represented on screen -- are not predisposed to have those suspicions. For us, a light is shone on an issue intentionally kept invisible. For 'them', whoever they may be, this episode gives faithful representation of that kind of bigotry they may have experienced (unlike traditional anti-racist narratives where the bigots get to be proven wrong or defeated by an upstanding minority). The episode twist broadcasts itself to some people and not to others, and the reason WHY this has happened and WHY it worked is the point -- it's an episode that demands thought and discussion on the issue at hand from everyone. I would worry that flipping the races for the sake of risque subversion would only rob the episode of that social impact, and take the weight out of the conversations being had about it. All that to say, if it's true that Moffat told him not to do it with a white Doctor then I'm certainly glad, because the nerve that this episode struck simply wouldn't be there with a 1:1 role reversal. Thank you so much for watching and for commenting, it really means a lot to us and I love having these discussions :D -The Bird

      To be honest I’d never considered the race swapping until after I saw RTD make that comment. He also said something about people assuming racism is gone in the far future and when actually it just evolves. And it just got me to thinking if history teaches us anything the ‘safe’ race of one century can be the victims the next. I just thought yeah, in the far future with interplanetary travel and the population so much bigger you probably would end up with people just removing themselves to giant ‘fine time’ bubbles with just one race/culture. I’m a sense coming full circle to before major travel/exploration of other continents was common. The only reason I think it might have been a bigger gut punch (not to take away from the episode at all it was amazing) is that unconsciously we’re so used to the doctor being white up till this point except for the fugitive doctor and his skin colour has never been an issue it would’ve come out of nowhere and almost nobody would’ve picked up on the micro-aggressions at all till after. With 15 you expect there’s going to be bigotry touched on at some point because of the nature of travelling into the past and even the present really. But yeah you’re right I do LOVE a good subversion of expectations or trope to get me thinking, like Bill and the Roman soldiers or the blue guy. I realise not everyone works that way. I just love all the discussions it’s creating tbh.

      @@Look_Over_There Yeah I think the discussion this episode generates is its strongest trait and tallest trophy. There are a lot of sci-fi racism stories we could tell, but I think by specifically grounding it in something real while signalling that not only is it not of the past, it will be of the future too if it's allowed to be. The way the audience is so used to the Doctor being white as well is I think what tricks a lot of us whites into NOT catching all the small transgressions that non-white fans clocked immediately. Upon a little introspection, I think I missed them because the Doctor being white has allowed a "colour-blind" viewing experience. I have never assumed before that the Doctor's skin would cause a problem, and I didn't assume now that it was a problem for Lindy. That's why I think it's fun to imagine the combination of sci-fi racism subversion narratives, but that choosing a grounded real-life scenario for this episode is what fundamentally made it. As whites watching an anti-white episode written word-for-word like this episode was, I am sure we would still NOT catch the hints because swapping the roles doesn't swap the social privileges and biases we bring to the episode. So when I say stuff like "they couldn't make this episode with the roles reversed" what I really mean is that they couldn't make the AFFECTS or the discourse of this episode with reversed roles. They could create different discourse, different conversations, and I'd welcome a different episode to try that, but they couldn't replicate this episode's social affect because the social roles we bring to the episode with us are what the story is interacting with. As I said in the full version of this video, I'm sure we'll be talking about this episode for the next 10+ years just because of how it is written to intentionally deliver us an incomplete problem which is left up to us to ponder on. It MAKES you think, and that's what makes it so special in my opinion. -The Bird

    I always hate how even though Hunter made clear that he like to have his hair short in the epilogue when Belos is no more and ge have a choice he kept the resemblance to Caleb like nothing Hunter wants matter plus i dont know if there was hints of ot before but he wanting to learn to carve palisman felt like they only want him to be bind to Eda's family Wich is sad this show mistreated hunter a lot

    I thought Nausicaa was an obvious huge inspiration, and Miyazaki in general. The sense of space and breath they give the environment is straight out of his films (and some other anime). I was also reminded of Mare Internum, by Der-Shing Helmer. I'd say the ecosystem she developed has a very similar vibe to this one, and the character dynamics also have some notable similarities.
